Eddie Stern’s journey into the yoga practice began in the late 80’s, when he was introduced to yoga by a co-worker. Yoga transformed his body and mind, and he now teaches others to feel better with yoga too.
The mind is a field that holds thought; awareness is an unlimited potential that the mind rests upon.
Eddie Stern’s journey into the practice began in the late 80's when he was introduced to yoga, meditation and vegetarianism by a co-worker at Bleecker Bob’s records.
At the time I was living a very unhealthy lifestyle,” he says in an interview in the New York Times' T magazine.
He learned how to stop the longing for things we actually all don't want (he quit smoking when he was 18 and was smoking 2 packs a day!) and dedicated his life to yoga. From his early 20's, Eddie studied Astanga Yoga, chanting, philosophy and rituals under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who developed the popular vinyāsa style of yoga referred to as Ashtanga Yoga.
Nowadays he teaches how yoga brings us embodied awareness.
Eddie is a well-known yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Ashtanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that make yoga work. Eddie has followed for more than twenty years, uninterruptedly, the teachings of his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from whom he learned the most profound essence of the Ashtanga Yoga system. Always close to Guruji until his death in 2009, Eddie devoted his entire life to the study of the Ashtanga Yoga system, including its more esoteric aspects. He has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture.
Eddie embodies the most authentic expression of how Indian thoughts can be relevant to our western lives. He's one of the most recognized and extraordinary teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is a great opportunity to share with him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga. He has published several books on yoga, including Yoga Mala (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), and On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace (TASCHEN). His next book, The Little Beginner’s Book on Yoga (FSG) is due out in 2018. His projects include the Urban Yogis, a gun- and harm reduction program in Queens, NY; Breathe, Move, Rest, a public education health and wellness non-profit; and most recently, The Breathing App, a free app that teaches resonance breathing for stress and anxiety reduction. Eddie teaches out of his school in Brooklyn, Ashtanga Yoga New York.

More about Eddie
"Yoga made a whole new realm assessable to me. Now, when I am performing, I have a sense of genuine communion. A different relationship with time, I feel I have become very much in the moment. I feel more relaxed, more centred."
